KIVU Nature Inc.

The company began in 1997, and has a large network of associates in North, Central, and South America, as well as Australia. The firm has its headquarters in Canada's capital city, Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa is located near the US border, directly north of Syracuse, New York, about 5 hour's drive east from Toronto, and about 2 hour's drive west of Montreal, Quebec. Ottawa is a small, pleasant, cosmopolitant city with two major areas of endeavour: the federal government, and the high-tech industry.

Alan began KIVU in 1997 as a vehicle within which to use knowledge, images, vision, and understanding about nature acquired in his professional career: beginning as a research scientist (for the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, and later for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, now Ministry of Natural Resources); then museum curator (of ichthyology for the Royal Ontario Museum); university professor (cross-appointed to the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Forestry and Landscape Architecture, and the Graduate School); and museum director and president (of Canada's Museum of Nature).

He has written and published extensively in both the scientific and popular press, and has been a regular advisor and contributor for television documentaries. He co-founded Canada's Centre for Traditional Knowledge. As a volunteer he has served many different organizations in different capacities. He is a photographer of note.

Alan is a visionary leader, and a pioneer, challenging existing theories and building new theories, working in extreme conditons to find new concepts, and communicating ideas on a broad scale. Consistently tackling problems of increasing complexity and scope, he searches for solutions to the environmental and cultural problems that face us as a species. (Canada)


Frances Emery, B.Sc., Vice-President of KIVU Nature Inc.

Frances is an editor and writer with twenty years of experience in various fields, especially economics, tax, and law documents for governments, associations, and universities. She is principal of her own editing and writing company. (Canada)


Dolores Elkin, Licenciada, Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (Spanish, English, Portugese, French)

Dolores is a university professor in the field of archaeology, specializing in underwater archaeology and located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has published many articles, and is especially adept with the media in finding interesting ways to interpret the archaeological sites. She has been involved in the production of archaeological exhibits for the public and is also a recognized consultant for issues that have legal ramifications. She is the current representative for Argentina on the United Nations underwater heritage sites program. (Argentina)


Maria Isabel Hernandez Llosas, Licenciada, Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (Spanish, English)

Maria is a university professor and international consultant on anthroplogy specializing in art forms. She has published extensively in the field and has been involved in the organization of a number of international events. She is a specialist in the current policy issues concerning the ideas of sustainable development using methods that conserve archaeological sites. (Argentina)


Ricardo Bastida, Licenciado, Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (Spanish, English)

Ricardo is a senior university professor in the field of zoology, specializing in marine biology. Ricardo is especially well known in the develpment field for his work with public aquariums and fisheries. He has also worked in marine archaeology. His publication list is extensive, and his presentations at scientific congresses have also been remarkable. (Argentina)


Rena Gunduz, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (German, English, Spanish)

Rena is an international consultant in the development field. Her specialty is archaeology, and she works with local communities to ensure that the best possible practices are adopted. She spent over a year living with and studying the haqueros (grave robbers) in Peru. Her successful objective was to convince the group they could make more money by conserving the sites for tourism than by destroying them. (Peru)


Kitty Emery, B.Sc., M.A., M.A., Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (English, Spanish)

Kitty is a university professor in the field of archaeology, specializing in environmental archaeology, the study of the relationship between the ancient peoples of an area and the environment in which they lived and worked. She studies primarily the Maya peoples of Central America. Her work involves identifying the animal and plant remains as well as archaeological materials, so she can interpret the sites from a unique perspective. (USA)


Des Griffin, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc.

Des is past director of the Australian Museum, and is a biologist by training. His many years as the CEO of a major nature and culture organization, as well as his interest and ability to relate to native peoples has meant that he is an internationally known expert in many fields. (Australia)


Rick Winterbottom, B.A., Ph.D., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc.

Rick, an ichthyologist and marine specialist, is currently curator of fishes and reptiles at the Royal Ontario Museum and is also professor at the University of Toronto. He has published extensively in ichthyology, especially systematics. He is also experienced in interpreting science for the public, through both exhibitions and television documentary productions. Joanne Barnaby, B.A., M.A., Associate, KIVU Nature Inc. (English, Slavy)

Joanne was born and raised in the Canadian north. As an aborignal person she understands the traditional knowledge and ways of understanding that belong to the native peoples. In her role as executive director of the Dene Cultural Institute, she was involved in many international projects, especially those dealing with traditional knowledge. Her innovative methods of bringing people together and of undertaking traditional knowledge research won her international acclaim. (Canada)


KIVU Nature Inc. is also associated with other networks of experts:

The Museum Group - a group of museum consultants who have all held positions as senior managers in museums, and who have chosen to contribute to the field from the position of consultants. This group has over 20 members. Alan is an active member of the group.
